Exploring Victoria: 7 Must-Experience Road Trips from Melbourne

Local Events
3rd May 2024

As much as Melbourne is Victoria’s epicentre of culture, entertainment, fashion, and food, venturing past the outskirts of the city and into the surrounding regions will reveal the remarkable scope of experiences that the state has to offer. Whether you’re an adventurous traveller or someone who prefers to be wined and dined, there’s no shortage of nearby towns offering memorable experiences to suit anyone and everyone, just a short road trip away.

1. Great Ocean Road

Drive from View Melbourne: 1 hour 25 minutes

Winding along the spectacular Victorian coastline, the Great Ocean Road is one of the most iconic road trip destinations in Australia, and it’s not hard to see why. Marvel at the majestic structures of the 12 Apostles, coined as the ‘jewel in the crown of the Great Ocean Road’.

Hungry? The choice is yours with a generous selection of breweries, wineries, cafes and restaurants.

Seeking an adventure? Golf courses, hiking trails, fishing, camping and surfing are just a handful of the countless opportunities to immerse yourself in nature.

Looking to relax and recharge? Indulge in the spas, retreats and shopping experiences to rejuvenate your sense of well-being.

2. Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges

Drive from View Melbourne: 1 hour

Sensational wineries, stunning vineyards and the magnificent scenery of the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges lie less than an hour from Melbourne. World-class restaurants beckon and, as Victoria’s oldest wine region, decadent food is met with the most exquisite pour of matching wine.

Get up close with some of the region’s native wildlife, or take a tour through some of the quaint and quirky towns dotted throughout the region, offering boutique shops to explore and charming cafes to sit back and enjoy a coffee, or Devonshire tea if you’re feeling fancy.

For a truly unique experience, hop on board the historic steam train, The Puffing Billy. Take a step back in time as you wind through the ranges and over the hills, taking in the serene scenery from an unmatched perspective.

3. Daylesford and Hepburn Springs

Drive from View Melbourne: 1 hour 25 minutes

If you’re seeking gentle exploration, a relaxed day out, or perhaps a pampering session, add Daylesford and Hepburn Springs to the list. Recognised as Australia’s premier spa and hot spring country, reap the benefits of the mineral-enriched spring water by taking a dip in one of the many natural geothermal hot springs or sipping on the pure mineral water for a cleanse within.

Or, for something a little more indulgent, stop by one of the region’s many lavish day spas, such as Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa or The Spa At Lake House

Although the hot springs and spas are the calling card, the fascinating history, incredible natural scenery, abundance of walking trails and charming essence of the area are all just as enjoyable. Take to the Hepburn Regional Park to immerse yourself in nature, or take the Historic Village Walk to see some of the town’s longest-standing factories, shops, homes and more.
